Family Yoga in Action

Last week, I had a Mom show up for one of my kid yoga after school classes, since she happened to be there for a parent/teacher conference. The brother and sister combo were so excited to show Mom their yoga moves. They led told her to keep her back leg nice and strong through Warrior I, to bend their front knee a little further into Reverse Warrior, and after explaining a yoga cartwheel, which flowed into Chataranga, they then made her hiss like a Cobra. I was so proud to watch them teach, since I often felt like I was torturing them with all these technical reminders!

We ended the session with some Balloon Breath, where they asked to do more breathing exercises than we normally do. We did some visualizations, where they told us about their private worlds, and then they were perfect resting yogis. They even recited the meaning of Namaste to perfection. I was in heaven and I thought it couldn't get any better, but then it did.

As we rolled up our mats and walked to the car, the 2nd grade student told her Mom that she thought her new step-Dad to-be was a really great guy, and that she was excited to have her as part of her new family. She also told her Mom that she looked forward to being a big sister to her two new step-sisters, and that she wanted to liked to play the Mom when they played house, which was much more fun than watching TV. Her Mom was so surprised to hear her say so many nice things. I could see how happy her Mom was to hear that her young daughter was accepting of her new family. We see so many families being pulled apart by issues of step-parents and step-children, that this discussion was worth thousands of dollars in potential family therapy!

As a yoga teacher, I couldn't have been more proud. It was at that moment that I knew why God had asked me to leave my engineering profession to become a yoga instructor. Yoga To Have Fun was started to help families best communicate and find support for each other, on and off the mat. By doing yoga together, we feel it helps to provide the foundation for inter-family communication. On a sunny day in Malibu, I saw a bright illustration of my vision coming true. As a civil engineer, I couldn't have wished for a stronger foundation!
